AIDA New Zealand
AIDA NZ is charged with the responsibility of supporting our elite athletes by facilitating competition in New Zealand and internationally as with any sport grassroots activity is important too and AIDA NZ wants to promote the sport at club level. To maintain consistency in the sport AIDA NZ engages the rules of AIDA International standards and selects internationally qualified judges for every world ranking competition.
AIDA NZ believes that divers should be aware of the risks of the sport and promotes safe diving by compiling appropriate references and contact information for freediving courses run in New Zealand.

Purging Lactic Acid
Level: Expert
After heavy freediving training, muscles (especially in the legs) can be full of lactic acid - the main waste product from the anaerobic energy pathways our body uses when we hold our breath. With time this acid is metabolised, but we can help stimulate blood flow to get rid of it quicker in a couple of ways:
1. compression clothing, such as this offered by Orca improves blood circulation in the muscles, helping to move those waste products through faster. After wearing these all night you will wake up with legs that feel light and fresh.
2. Inversions are a way of draining the blood out of the limbs. Lying on your back next to a wall, with your legs at a right angle against the wall is the easiest way. Shoulder stands and head stands, which are taught in most styles of yoga, are the next step. Lifting your arms as well will drain all four limbs simultaneously, but be careful and use a safety partner the first time your try this pose!
