Dave Mullins Claims New Dynamic Apnea World Record !

10-09-2008

Dave Mullins has today extended his Dynamic With Fin World record by 4m with some controversy in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt today. Mullins, who swam 10 lengths of the 25m pool is part of the New Zealand Freediving team taking part at the World Team Champs being held in Egypt.

The team who were the favorites to take out the event have been hampered by issues, including extreme heat, resulting in dives that have not been favorable. Mullins just a few days ago however claimed a new National Record in Static Apnea with a dive of 8:11sec’s.

Controversy around the new World Record was due to the pool being 18mm shorter than the 25m standard, AIDA International rules calls for any ratified world record to be completed in a pool at least 25m long.

Consideration was given to the circumstances around the performance at it was decided that the record would stand, however at 248m, rather than the assumed 250m.

Mullins nominated 1m for his dive, ensuring that he would be seeded early in the day to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. “The warm water was still making it difficult to judge my progress, everything felt easy and there were none of the usual signs of the dive reflex or Hypoxia during the dive. This was a bit disconcerting and I came up after 10 lengths while I was still feeling fresh” said Mullins from Egypt.

This is the second world record in as many months for Mullins.
