DeepObsession 2011 Depth Competition 2011

05-12-2011

The DeepObsession Depth Competition in Lake Pupuke on the North Shore of Auckland morphed from a two day event, into a one day event to avoid bad weather forcast for the second day.

This then really turned up the heat on the divers to complete three maximum attempt dives in a single day.  The preasure was on...

Update: Results are available at the bottom of this article.

While the competition was a relatively small event, even by New Zealand standards, the preasure was on and it turned out to be a fantastic, exciting day ... even for our spectator / guest / medic (David Grundy).

The day started with Phil Clayton getting a white card for a 30m CNF followed by a White Card for Sam Barnes for his 35m CNF and a White Card for Wade Barmby with a 30m CWT dive.

A short break to allow the (two?) Recreational Divers to take the plunge resulted in Daniella getting a White Card for a 15m CWT dive.

The second round of dives resulted in a 45m CWT dive for Phil.  This was a nice clean dive with a good strong surface protocol (a new PB Phil?) and a White Card.  Sam completed a clean 36M FIM dive for his second White Card of the comp and Wade completed a comfortable 35m FIM for his second White Card.

It was at this point that a vote was made to complete the last dives of the competition on the same day to avoid having to pack and unpack again for the morning.

Phil managed a new FIM PB with a 50m dive, however he decided to re-arange the SP to match the following:

- Okay Sign
- S**T!!
- Face Gear
- More cursing
- I'm okay

Unfortunatly for Phil, this was a Red Card which was a real shame as Phil looked very strong when he surfaced.  Afterwards Phil explained the excitement of the dive overcame his ability to perform the correct SP.

Sam manged a strong 30m CWT dive with a clean SP using a mono-fin he borrowed from Phil.  Sam had left his fin on shore as his third and final dive was not scheduled until the next day.

Wade opted for a 25m CNF dive to complete his third discipline.  Having not trained at all for CNF before the comp, Wade warmed up with a couple of 8m dives on the practice line.

He managed to complete his 25m dive with a White Card after working through a pretty strong SAMBA.   He was "goneburger" as John (judge) had put it.

The event started and ended well.  The weather held fast and all competitors, judges, safety divers and spectators enjoyed the New Zealand summer sun on iconic Lake Pupuke.

Next year we would like to see more competitors in both AIDA and Rec grades.  They don't know what they missed.

Photos coming soon....
